Choose how to share photos from your Mac.
A useful shared album needs more than a link. Decide where the photographs should live, who should add them and when your guests need access.

Start with the album you want to deliver
For an event collection, you may want the photographer to prepare one album and let each guest find their own pictures. For a family trip, you may want everyone to contribute photographs to the same collection. Those are different workflows, even when both begin with an album link.
Decide whether you can keep the source Mac online during the sharing window. Memories serves a selected album from that Mac. An iCloud Shared Album keeps its shared files in iCloud. That hosting choice affects how you plan delivery.
Compare the sharing workflows
This comparison describes the current Memories Mac release and Apple’s documented Shared Albums workflow. On a narrow screen, scroll the table sideways to read both columns.
| Sharing choice | Memories | iCloud Shared Albums |
|---|---|---|
| Where the shared files live | The source Mac serves the selected album while Memories and app access are active. | Shared photographs and videos are kept in iCloud. |
| Who adds photographs | The owner imports on Mac. Guests search and download; guest posting is not supported. | Participants can add their own photographs when the owner permits it. |
| How guests use the album | Open the link in a browser, submit a face query and review the returned matches from that album. | Use Apple’s invitation or link controls; available web access depends on the album’s software version and settings. |
| After a guest saves a photo | Stopping sharing blocks future access; it cannot recall downloaded copies. | Saved copies remain with the recipient even after the shared album is removed. |
When Memories fits your collection
Choose Memories when you want an encrypted working library on an Apple silicon Mac, local photo analysis and guest face search within an album you deliberately share. Guests open the shared address in a browser; they do not need the Memories desktop app.
Plan a time when your Mac can remain awake, connected and running Memories with active access. This release does not keep a second hosted gallery online when the source Mac is unavailable. The owner prepares the collection; it does not provide a group-upload album.
Try a small collection first. The photo-album overview shows the actual app, and the sharing walkthrough explains preparing the album and checking the complete guest journey.
When iCloud Shared Albums fits
Consider Apple’s Shared Albums when you want a collection held in iCloud and contributions from invited participants. Check the owner’s sharing settings and the software versions used by your guests. Apple documents different invitation and browser options for newer and older albums. Follow Apple’s Shared Albums instructions for Mac.
Resolution and storage rules also depend on the version that created the album. Apple’s version-27 albums support full-resolution sharing and normally use the owner’s iCloud storage; earlier albums have different limits. Check Apple’s current Shared Albums limits before using an album for full-resolution delivery.
Test the guest experience before sharing the collection
Open your album link in a separate browser session and check the experience a guest will see. Confirm that the intended photographs are available and that a download opens. Tell guests when a Mac-hosted album will be online and how to contact its owner if they cannot find a picture.
For Memories face search, use your own face photograph or a consenting participant’s photo and review each match. Matching is an estimate: lighting, pose and similar-looking people can affect the results. A guest query is sent to the source Mac for processing. Read the privacy policy and event-photo search guide for that workflow.
Keep your original source files and your existing backup routine. A shared album is a delivery choice; it should not be your only copy of an important collection.
